Embellishing on Silk Velvet with Foil - Sue Sercombe

We invited Sue  to come to the island to give us a talk on "Who invented the sewing Machine" and a workshop embellishing velvet with foil. Her talk was most amusing and very well received.  The following day she kept us on our toes explaining techniques and giving us lots of really useful tips.  The pieces that everyone produced at the end of the day speak for themselves. It was a really inspirational workshop and anyone who did not sign up for it missed a treat.

A VERY wise trio!

These are from the YE meeting on the 11th May, which was led by Dee Newson and Sue Carine.
The children really enjoyed using both sewing machines and hand stitching their owls. Fantastic.


 CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER.

The YE made a dragon for the competition named “Fire” which was displayed at Laxey earlier in the year.
They hand painted silk which was used to decorate a dragon frame made from willow.  This was free standing and over six foot long.
The dragon was awarded second prize in this competition.
A photo of the dragon was submitted into the NW YE Regional group competition in the Spring, and was awarded a box of assorted threads, from the sponsor Coats.

Dyeing - Julie Fayle

We each purchased scarves from Rubina Porter hand made by the ladies at The Sreepur Village in Bangladesh..Under Julie's instruction we dyed them, block printed, beaded and stitched them. It was a great workshop and we each came home with a unique hand made scarf. I have today forwarded a cheque to Rubina for £275 which was the proceeds from the sale of the scarves and cards from Bangladesh. She was so pleased with the support that she has had from us that our pictures have been put on the Merseyside Guilds web site and in the Sreepur News.   I am so pleased you all look wonderful. It sounds an exciting day. It would be good for other groups to do the same. The regional news would be a good way to tell of the event- or what about Stitch Mag or Workbox it is such a lovely story about your branch helping the mothers at Sreepur. Christmas with the Young Embroiderer's

This is the result of the Young Embroiderers’ workshop on 8th December.
10 children made Christmas trees in a workshop led by Dee Newson and Sue Carine.
The principle was based on Suffolk puffs, but the circular shape and structure was supported by a plastic milk bottle top, which created strength and shape.  All the children worked hard and all went home with them completed.
They had a well earned break of chocolates and sweets and delicious Christmas themed cup cakes made by Rosie.

Fire!

The Young Embroiderer's entered into the challenge of participating in an exhibition staged by the Hodgeson Loom Gallery in Laxey entitled"FIRE".  This was their magnificent achievement! The Dragon of all Dragons!

Machine Embroidered Lace - Wendy Dolan

Wendy traveled over to the island from her home in Hove to give us a very interesting illustrated talk on Art, Architecture in Stitch. She managed to bring over a large suitcase full of her work to illustrate her talk and to show us her beautifully executed work. She told us how she layered up her fabrics, stitched them together and then painted them before starting on the embroidery. She managed to incorporate her fine art training with her stitchery making her work very painterly.
The following day her workshop was inspirational.  She introduced us to working on soluble fabric.  For those who had already worked with it she gave us many ways of incorporating all kinds of threads and attaching the motifs we produced. Wendy never stopped encouraging and telling us her secrets for the whole time she was with us.  We feel very envious of people who live in the south who can go to her many courses and workshops at West Dean College near Chichester.

AGM

Our AGM was well attended with the business dealt with swiftly and the new officers voted in.  It was followed by a demonstration of Flower Trapping by Ann Trew. Ann showed us which flowers were suitable and how to flatten the flowers so they would sit nicely when trapped under fine chiffon. She bought along this beautiful quilt together with cards and framed pictures she had made along with kits for us to have a go with at home.
